We are proud to announce that Tubby’s grilled submarines, a Detroit tradition for over 40 years, has joined the U-13 racing team! The company, which has over 60 stores thoughout southeast Michigan, will be our title sponsor for the 2012 APBA Gold Cup. Continuing to be a favorite in Metro Detroit, Tubby’s has been absent from the unlimited hydroplane racing series since 2001, when they won the Gold Cup as Title Sponsor for the U-9.

After electing not to run the 2011 season in order to perform hull improvements and complete a significant amount of parts fabrications, the U-13 Spirit of Detroit is eager to return to the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Series. We are especially pleased to team up with Tubby’s Grilled Submarines and expect good things ahead for 2012.

In an effort to be in the forefront of the H1 youth movement that was highly touted at the recent Las Vegas convention. The U-13 team has initiated the first apprentice program specifically directed to young unlimited hydroplane fans. While she may not be ready for the 2011 season Hannah has been making great progress to replace our current old crew chief Bill Guckian.

Even though we preserved the points needed to compete in Doha, the team voted to bring the old girl home for major renovations. We proved we can run and run fast. We will now make plans to buy some needed parts, tear off the decks and go through the entire structure to be ready for next year.

The U13 Spirit of Detroit along with some sponsor decals will be on Dr. Ken Muskatel’s U25. Three of our crew members will join his for the UIM World Championship Oryx Cup in Doha, Qatar.

We will try to feed via internet from Doha.

The U13 Spirit of Detroit is competing in the “Degree Men presents Air National Guard Championship”. Stay tuned to the Detroit Unlimited Racing facebook page for updated posts throughout the weekend.

The U13 Spirit of Detroit will be heading to the docks at Jacksonvill but with a big detour via San Diego! The unlimited hydroplanes will return to San Diego Bayfair September 17-19, 2010. Gotta love Mission Bay!
